Budget 2024-25 Highlights: Investments in Cyber Security and Technology, part 2.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced the 2024-25 Budget on May 14th, unveiling major investments in cyber security and technology. So let's continue with some more of the key highlights:

APRA & ASIC: $206.4 million dedicated to improving data and cyber security.

NDIS Cyber Upgrades: $160.7 million allocated for cyber upgrades in the NDIS.

ATO Upgrades: $78.7 million to enhance the ATO's information and communications systems for real-time monitoring of suspicious activities.

Parliamentary Services: $12.8 million over four years to boost IT and cyber security.

Census Data Security: $196.8 million over three years to ensure safe collection and storage of Census data.

AI and National Security: $39 million for the safer use of AI and addressing national security risks, plus $21.6 million for a reshaped National AI Centre and $15.7 million for AI policies and regulations.

Quantum Computing: $466.4 million for PsiQuantum to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer.

Small Business Support: The $20,000 instant asset write-off extended to June 30, 2025.

The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) acknowledged some budget outcomes but expressed concern over the limited funding for critical technologies, especially AI. Compared to countries like Canada and Singapore, Australia's $39.9 million investment over five years is seen as insufficient.

"The persistent pattern of insufficient investments and slow adoption of transformative technologies threatens to keep Australia trailing behind its international counterparts. As other nations forge ahead in the AI race, Australia risks becoming increasingly uncompetitive and unproductive," said AIIA CEO Simon Bush.
